The Watzmann is a historical symbol to the Berchtesgadener region. For almost a 100 years there has been a legally protected nature area around the Watzmann. First it was called the Berchtesgaden Alpine Plant Protection Area, then the Königssee Nature Reserve, and know Berchtesgaden National Park. 

Its "Majesty" the Watzmann is therefore  a guarantor for natural beauty of the Berchtesgaden region.
